Anne U is a Melbourne-based artist working across contemporary ceramics, objects, and installation. Her practice is driven by systems of material experimentation, where she seeks to push the technical and aesthetic boundaries of her medium, embracing unpredictability as an essential part of her process. Sculpted from custom blends of clays and aggregates, she maintains an ongoing research practice in glaze development through testing, reformulating, and iterative firings, allowing alchemical transformations to reveal the final form.
Influenced by surreal and oneiric visions, Anne draws on fragmented memories and the absurdity of dream imagery as conceptual frameworks, allowing subconscious ideas to emerge into evocative form. These ideas manifest across a range of scales and contexts, from singular objects to spatial installations, where the boundary between sculpture and utility remains deliberately open.
Anne U acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land, on which she lives and works, the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and Bunurong peoples of the Kulin Nation and pays respect to their Elders, past and present.
